Most adults know that coffee is beneficial to your psychological health. Without it, many people would feel like a zombie most days and would likely snap more easily. The entire industry is built upon the idea of coffee being not just good for your social life, but helping you get through the day. Yet coffee is also good for your health. Black coffee has many medicinal qualities, just like many foods which derive from plants.

Physical Benefits

Several of the health benefits of coffee are purely physical. We all know coffee can help you feel more awake and have more energy overall. This is the result of both the caffeine and the vitamins that are active ingredients in coffee. However, coffee has other benefits that improve your overall physical well being. For instance, it aids in the fat burning process. This is a direct result of caffeine, which is known to boost the metabolic rate. In addition, the caffeine in coffee allows your nervous system to work more effectively, inducing your hormones which aid in the improvement of your overall physical activity.

It also appears that coffee helps people avoid type II diabetes, though there is no known reason for this happy coincidence as of yet. It could be a function of how the body’s nervous system becomes more efficient after ingesting coffee. This thereby, makes the other functions of the body more efficient. Other physical benefits which can be attributed to coffee are decreased risks of stroke, heart disease, cancer, and even a longer life span.

Brain Function

Other benefits of drinking coffee include increased brain functioning. Caffeine is known to block adenosine, which inhibits brain activity. Therefore, drinking coffee may actually make you smarter. Many of the “smart” pills on the market contain the same amount of caffeine as two cups of coffee. It also reduces the risk of developing neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and dementia.

The same benefits of coffee that increase your energy levels can also be attributed to decreasing your risk of depression and making you happier overall. As a matter of fact, a 2011 Harvard study showed that women who drank four cups of coffee per day had a 20% lower risk in becoming depressed. This is likely due to the increased endorphin production associated with caffeine and the overall feeling of higher energy most coffee drinkers experience.

It is obvious that coffee is a part of our culture. However, more and more, it is obvious that coffee should remain an integral part of our lives. Not only are our social lives benefiting from the increased consumption and availability of coffee, but the health benefits of drinking coffee are huge.

Sneak Peek for April

If all goes well, we will be reporting on our blind taste. Can a well-tuned pod rival a coffee house pour-over? Peter Middlecamp, owner of Black Sheep Coffee, has invited a bunch of his fellow “coffee geek” friends to test some very good coffee and see if there is a  discernible difference between a coffee house pour-over and a well placed pod.

Peter will also our guest blogger next month.
